Ode to the guerilla knitters!

I have for a long time been deeply and utterly impressed and tickled by the street art form known as guerilla knitting.

Apparently this is globally widespread, but I get the feeling that the feat of 'dressing' buildings, statues, park benches, stoops, railings and other basic city elements in knitted splashes of colour may be closer to home for people who live in colder climates? In any case, I've heard of it mostly as a Stockholm movement.

More specifically, there is a tight-knit [hardy har har] guerilla clique (chiefly composed of some very creative and mischievous ladies living in Stockholm) who do these little acts of rebellious craftsmanship and post pictures of accomplished missions on their blog, http://www.stickkontakt.blogspot.com/.

Stickkontakt is a swedish double entendre meaning either 'knitting connection' or 'electrical plug'). Even if you can't read swedish, I suggest you check it out and just marvel at how inventively they've been dressing up the city. I grin intensely when I look at some of the stuff they've done - so I decided to dig up some of my own photos I took in 2007 of some of their actions in Stockholm. Note how the water running through the 'sock' kind of adds to it...
Apparently, Stickkontakt is rumoured to have irritated the hell out of Sthlm neo-nazis by knitting little pink leg warmers for the statue of King Karl XII (= major symbolic figure for neo-nazis in Sweden, unfortunately).
Whoever puts leg warmers on the king is a friend of mine! ;)

PS: Anyone heard of any similar knitting organizations? Tell me more!!

A homecoming to remember

I came home from work the other day to find this lying coyly on my hall mat, and was so surprised that I laughed my head off.

(DÖDEN means DEATH in Swedish)

I suppose that either I have slightly morbid humour or that I've thought about death enough to not be perturbed when reminded of it. At any rate, it rocks to be a subscriber of a magazine concerned wholly with existential issues. :)

Plus it always seems to fortuitously drop into my mailbox whenever I'm in a slump and need a reminder of the bigger perspective in life. Existera Magazine, ladies & gentlemen. Gives you hope of a deeper meaning back, even if DEATH happens to surprise you by lying on your hall mat like a kitten one day.

Past issues have featured on their cover: Älskar dig (=love you), Idealkvinnan (=the ideal woman), Skräck (=fear), Snällhet (= Kindness) and Losers (=losers... swedish can be really easy sometimes, huh ;)
